Alliance CFM recently attended a hotel to carry out an emergency plumbing repair after a leak was discovered within the property’s pipework.
Following investigation, the source of the leak was traced to a pinhole caused by localised corrosion, with limescale also present within the affected pipework. Although pinhole leaks can initially appear minor, once the pipe wall has deteriorated enough for water to escape, the affected area needs to be addressed promptly.
Finding the Source of the Pinhole Leak
With any commercial plumbing leak, identifying exactly where the water is coming from is an important first step. Pinhole leaks are small and can develop where a localised section of pipework has deteriorated.
Our engineers located the affected section and carried out the necessary repair to resolve the leak.
In a busy commercial environment such as a hotel, plumbing faults can affect guest rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and other facilities, making the investigation and repair particularly important.
What Causes Pinhole Leaks in Pipework?
A pinhole leak occurs when a small area of the pipe wall deteriorates sufficiently for a perforation to form.
There are several potential causes of localised pipework deterioration, and the specific cause depends on factors including the pipe material, water conditions, system design and the condition of the installation.
Establishing what has happened to the pipework, rather than simply addressing the visible water, helps determine the appropriate repair and whether the surrounding installation requires further attention.
Does a Pinhole Leak Mean More Pipework Could Be Affected?
Not necessarily, but when a pinhole leak is associated with localised deterioration, it can be sensible to consider the condition of the surrounding pipework rather than viewing the failure entirely in isolation.
Depending on the age, material and overall condition of the installation, further assessment can help establish whether deterioration is limited to the failed section or whether other areas may also require attention.
