With energy prices rising, many homeowners are asking the same question: how can I run my boiler more efficiently and reduce heating costs?
At Alliance CFM, we are regularly asked how to cut energy use without replacing a perfectly good heating system. Harry, our Domestic Services Director, has listed a number of practical steps that can help improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary usage and keep your boiler working properly.
Below are his recommended energy saving tips.
Change to a Smart Thermostat
Switching to a smart thermostat gives you far better control over your heating. You can set timers to reduce unnecessary heating when you are out of the house or asleep, rather than running the system continuously. Smart controls allow you to adjust temperatures remotely, set heating schedules that match your routine and avoid heating an empty property. Reducing wasted run time is one of the simplest ways to lower energy usage without sacrificing comfort.
Reduce the Flow Temperature of Your Boiler
Many boilers are set to higher flow temperatures than needed. Reducing the flow temperature allows modern condensing boilers to operate more efficiently by maximising heat recovery from flue gases. Lower flow temperatures can improve performance and reduce gas consumption while still keeping your home warm. If you are unsure how to adjust this setting safely, seek advice from one of our qualified heating engineers.
Turn Down Your Hot Water Temperature
Your hot water may be set higher than necessary. Turning down the temperature slightly can reduce energy consumption while still providing sufficient hot water for daily use. There is rarely a need for excessively high tap temperatures. Small adjustments here can contribute to noticeable savings over time.
Close Your Curtains and Internal Doors
Heat loss increases the workload on your boiler. Closing curtains in the evening helps retain warmth inside your home. Internal doors should also be kept closed to prevent heat spreading into rooms that are not in use. Keeping warmth concentrated in occupied spaces reduces the strain on your heating system.
Increase Boiler Efficiency by Servicing Your Heating System Regularly
One of the most important ways to improve boiler efficiency is through annual servicing.
Regular servicing ensures:
- Clean and safe combustion
- Proper operation of internal components
- Correct pressure levels
- Early detection of wear and tear
A boiler that is not serviced can gradually lose efficiency and consume more fuel than necessary. Routine maintenance keeps the system running as it should.
Maintain the Fuel and Air Filters
Blocked or dirty fuel and air filters restrict airflow and affect combustion quality. Poor combustion reduces efficiency and can increase fuel usage. Ensuring filters are clean allows your boiler to burn fuel correctly and maintain stable performance.
Bleed Your Radiators
Do you have cold spots at the top of your radiators? This is usually caused by trapped air inside the system. Air prevents hot water from circulating evenly, meaning your boiler must run longer to achieve the same temperature. Bleeding your radiators releases trapped air and improves heat distribution, helping the system operate more effectively.
Consider a Powerflush
Over time, sludge and debris can build up inside your pipes and radiators. This restricts water flow and reduces heating performance. A powerflush clears deposits from your heating system, restoring proper circulation and improving heat output.
Ongoing Maintenance and Support
Preventative maintenance is key to keeping your heating system running efficiently long term. Alliance CFM offers a range of maintenance contracts that can be paid monthly, helping spread the cost of servicing and system care throughout the year.
